Jonathan Edwards came over to me and said: ‘What’s the matter with you? ’ But I never felt ill, I just felt as though I didn’t have that extra little bit. It wasn’t clicking together. So what did Jared do about this? Well, I did ease off a bit, but it wasn’t until the end of the year that I realised how rundown I was. It is an interesting example not only of how far someone is prepared to push themselves, but also how our self-awareness can dip when we are under pressure. But such setbacks go hand-in-hand with an elite athlete’s career.

But as a sports scientist or coach, you are doing it for someone else. I’m not sure that every sports scientist or coach thinks like that, as some are more interested in it in terms of what is in it for them. The way I view it is that with my training group, that selfishness that I had as an athlete, I transfer to the group and try and get the best for them, in the same way as I tried to get the best for myself as an athlete. This appears a smart way to recognise that having an ego is important in whatever we do, but it is the way that it is subsumed into the benefit of the athlete and the group that works particularly well.

Seeking feedback However, it is true that we are sometimes not the most accurate or objective observers of our own behaviour, which makes reflective practice challenging. In his interview, Nik Diaper illustrated this point when he talked about the feedback he received after being rejected for a job for which he had applied in one of the major sports (see page 149). The feedback was tough to take. But being a reflective person, Nik was determined and changed the behaviour that was causing the unfavourable perception of him by some others.
